PSHE – Spring term 2018

Online Safety

We are working towards Healthy Schools Award. So far the school has started Forest Schools as an after-school club and one day a week with 4 classes. More staff are being trained so that there will be more wide-spread use of the spinney for educational use. This is a big plus for Healthy Schools.

We have also had an E-safety day and this is a big part of Healthy schools and anti-bullying as well as being part of a large campaign to prevent children from being abused. Here are some useful websites to visit if you are concerned about your child and the internet:

www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/online-safety – and visit SHARE AWARE as well as the section about online safety for parents.

There is an app called NETAWARE which can give you details about games and informs you as to whether they are suitable for your child or not.

At school we have a selection of leaflets that I can photocopy for you if you would like one. Just write a message in your child’s home-school diary or phone school.

Also the NSPCC have teamed up with O2, the mobile phone company, and if you are worries about putting privacy settings on your child’s phone or tablet, they will do it for you, whether you are on O2 or not.

Food

At Oaklands we are starting a drive towards growing our own food and using it in cooking sessions with the children. We are working with a lady called Lisa Didier and Pat from Tesco to change our sensory garden into a food-growing area, as well as using the large planters at the front of the school and other areas at the back of the school. Mrs Mee is attending a ‘seed swap’ event in March and this will be followed by a week where we invite parents/grandparents to come in and help to dig over the soil to prepare it for growing seeds. A letter will go out nearer the time but the date for your diary is week beginning March 19th.

Holiday Activities

If you are at a loose end in the holidays and you feel your child would benefit from extra physical activity, then visit www.aimstrongsport.com/services based in Leicester. It holds Holiday Activity events which are very cheap at £50 for a week or £12.50 per day. Well worth getting in contact with them. You can email the organiser – harry.white79@gmail.com or phone them on 07580101510. They are well-equipped for SEN as they use SAQ, which we also use in school.

Emotional Health and Well-being

We are also looking at improving some of the areas of the school as part of our bid and we will be giving the children opportunities to have their say in what they would like. All schools now have a ‘calm area’ and we would like to do the same here. If you know of any contacts where we can collect free donations that would be fantastic. Just let the office know. We are looking for garden furniture, mobiles to hang, especially ones that make gentle sounds, possibly a water feature, an easel for mark making, outdoor chalks, water play equipment. We also require any old quilt covers (king size preferably) and saris.
