Welcome to Deer!
In Deer Class we are covering the following topics:
|Autumn Term||Spring Term||Summer Term|
In Spring Term Deer Class learnt about three different topics:
1. History: Time travellers, significant events.
2. Out and About: Going to the local shop.
3. Science: Let’s plant it!
In Spring term we learnt about events which happened in the past. At the beginning of the topic we had a look at pictures when we were babies and we placed the pictures on the time line. We learnt language of time like now and in the past. Children also learnt about King Richard III and Vikings.
Pupils seemed to enjoy our history workshop. We had a lady who came from the museum to show us various artefacts and tell us interesting information about King Richard III. We could touch the artefacts and we guessed what they were being used for in the past. We also played detective archaeologists when we had to draw skeleton on the grid as it was arranged in our classroom. We tried various clothes and armour on from medieval times.
2. Going to the local shop (20.2.2017-10.3.2017, 3 weeks topic).
Next Spring term topic was based around going to the local shop. The children looked at the different types of shops there are and what sorts of things could be bought from the shops. They had the opportunity to role play shops. We set different shops in Deer and Hare’s class and we used various coins to pay for the things they wanted to “buy”. We ended the topic with a visit to the local shops in Evington. We took picture of different types of shops that were in Evington and the goods that they sold. The children had money to get some refreshments from the Jackson’s shop in the village.
3. Science - Let’s plant it! (13.3.2017 - 7.4.2017, 4 weeks tropic).
In Spring term we learnt about plants, their life cycles and their importance in our ecosystems. At the beginning of the topic we learnt about parts of the plants. We described plant cycles and food chains. We also learnt to distinguish between fruit and vegetables. We have explored how to set up tests to discover how plants use water and light. We have planted our own vegetables as well.
Pupils seemed to enjoy our day trip to Whetstone pastures farm. At the beginning of day the farmer Anthony took us on a tractor around the trail which led us to the animal part of the farm. Pupils explored the animals and their life on the farm there. We had a look at cows and their calfs and learnt about them. We discovered lifecycle of wheat grain and its use there as well. Then we went back to where we started and looked at the plants (0.5 mile away). We experienced planting of cress seeds in the barn. Before we planted the seeds we painted our pots – personalised them. We also played various interaction games like milking an artificial cow. We had lunch in one of the barns. In the afternoon we made our own apple crumble using fruits from the farm. Every child made their own apple crumble to their taste. The children seemed to enjoy all the various activities during a day. Children especially appeared to enjoy the ride on the tractor.
